Craving a Mint Oreo Shamrock Shake? Don’t want to leave the house? No problem, this homemade mint Oreo milkshake hits the spot, is super easy to make, and will cost you a fraction of the drive-thru price!
I have shared a similar recipe for a Shamrock Shake, basically a vanilla shake with some mint extract for flavor and food coloring for green color. This recipe can also be made without the food coloring for a delicious peppermint milkshake if the green food is not your jam, lol!
You can make the recipe below a bit thicker to create a homemade Oreo Mint McFlurry. Just use half the milk, crush the Oreos, and mix in by hand so there are chunks! I will explain more below!
Ingredients & Kitchen Gadgets needed for a Mint Oreo Milkshake
Ingredients Needed
- Vanilla Ice Cream – use a good quality. I prefer regular vanilla vs French vanilla for this recipe
- Mint Extract – you can find this in the spice aisle in your grocery store. You only need a little bit so the bottle will last you a long time.
- Milk – you can use whatever milk you prefer. I have used both whole milk and skim milk.
- Green Food coloring – it doesn’t matter if you use liquid or gel food coloring for this.
- Oreo Cookies – buy the big package you know you will eat more than you say you will.
Kitchen Gadgets
- Ice Cream Scoop – we go through these like water so if anyone has a great one, I am all ears!
- Measuring Cup – if you are type A and need to measure the ice cream, this is for you, if not, measure with your heart!
- Blender – I absolutely LOVE my Blendtec, however any blender you have will work, even personal-sized ones. If you want a McFlurry vs a shake, then the pulse option is great to have.
- Fun Glasses – Mason jars, mugs, tall glasses, use whatever you have an whatever you like to drink from!

Some alternate ingredient options would be to use mint chocolate chip ice cream in place of the vanilla ice cream and green food coloring. I still recommend using the mint extract with this option as the mint flavor from the ice cream will get diluted when adding the milk.
Heavy cream can be used in place of the milk and mint chocolate cookies in place of the Oreo cookies for a cream shake.
Rather than garnishing with an Oreo cookie or Oreo cookie crumbs, you could opt for whipped cream and a maraschino cherry and fresh mint!
Add-in Ideas: Mini Chocolate chips, sprinkles, a hot chocolate drizzle.
Milkshake Vs McFlurry
I like options. Everyone knows this. If you are new here, welcome, my name is Cheryl and I like options. I want you to be able to take a recipe, craft, project, etc., and make it your own and use what you have so I like to give options. This recipe is no different.
Milkshake – The Oreo cookies are blended at the same time as the rest of the ingredients creating a shake that is smooth and creamy. You can drink it with a straw.
McFlurry – This uses less milk by half. Everything but the Oreos are blended at the same time, creating more of a soft serve consistency. The Oreo cookies are crushed and mixed in either by hand or the pulse option on the blender creating bite size chunks within the ice cream mixture. A spoon is necessary for this homemade McFlurry recipe!
Both are awesome. I’m telling you, it was ROUGH having to test both of these options. In fact, I wasn’t sure I had the recipe nailed down after the first round, so I had to test this multiple times. My job is tough, friends. My caloric count for the day will not be discussed, however. There is always tomorrow.
This recipe can be enjoyed year-round however the green demeanor screams St. Patrick’s Day so if you are here on this recipe post for a St. Patrick’s Day treat, you may also enjoy these other treats:
- Bailey’s Irish Cream Quick Fudge
- Shamrock Puffcorn Crack – just trust me, it tastes as great as the name is whacked out!

- Shamrock Pretzel Bites – probably my most popular St. Patrick’s Day treat idea!
- Delicious Tropical Green Smoothie – yes, even a healthy option, lol! (rainbow smoothie bowl here)
