Cricut Design Space will automatically place your design on the appropriate mat where it deems fit. In most cases, this is perfect and we can move forward with our project. However, in other cases, the automatic placement is not conducive to minimizing material waste or being able to use most of your material area.
Today we will talk about how to move your designs on the cut mat as well as how to combine mats in Cricut design space! Let’s get started!
How to Move Designs on Your Cricut Cut Mat
This process is ideal when you want to utilize a scrap piece of vinyl or iron on! Here you can move your designs so that they fit within the specified area or size of your scrap on your mat! Here is how to do that!
- Choose your Design, Click Make It!
- Select your design, drag and drop to move
Select the design you want to move. Once selected simply drag and drop the design wherever on the mat you would like the Cricut to cut.
- Proceed to normal cutting.
Click continue and follow the on-screen prompts to connect a machine, select materials and cut your design.
You may find detailed tutorial on cutting with the Cricut here.
NOTE: Be sure not to overlap your designs, as the Cricut WILL cut overlapped once you move items on the mat screen

HOW TO COMBINE MATS IN CRICUT DESIGN SPACE
Time needed: 5 minutes
This process is best when you want to fit as much on a mat as possible in order to minimize the waste of the material you are cutting!
- Choose Design & Click Make It
- Select Design you want to move to another mat
Select the Mat where the design is placed. Next, Select your design. Once selected a box will appear around your design. A small circle with an arrow will appear in the right corner and a small circle with three dots will appear in the left corner.
- Click on the Small Circle with three dots in the upper left
When you click this it will give you two options. Option one is to “Move to another Mat”. Option one is to “Hide Selected” (not cut). Select “Move to Another Mat”
- Select Which Mat Number to Move Design onto.
A popup window will appear with an icon of all the mats on your project. Simply select which mat you would like to move your design and click Confirm.
- Adjust design location as needed
Using the drag and drop method described above in this tutorial, adjust your designs as needed
NOTE: Your design might be overlapping a design already on the mat. If you are moving the same designs check to see if they are on top of one another! Sometimes they look hidden! - Finish Cutting as Normal
Click continue and follow the on-screen prompts to connect a machine, select materials and cut your design.

What do you do with the blank or empty mat in preview after you have combined the designs?
Cheryl Spangenberg says
Hi Naomi, it just “goes away” since it is blank when you continue onto the cut screen!

I am trying to move mats after watching this video and have done it on other projects, this time when I click on the 3 dots and chose “move object” it takes me to the screen where there should be all the other mats I am using, but it only shows the option of “new mat” even though I have objects on 3 other mats. What I am I doing wrong? I have restarted design space and my computer, nothing works and I am frustrated. thanks in advance for any help.
Cheryl Spangenberg says
Leah are all your mats the same color or different colors? (like the color of the layer on the mat)
Rhonda Zahn says
I had this same issue and called Cricut. You can’t move objects with score lines attached.
