A Clay Pot Graduation Cap is the perfect DIY Graduation Party decor! Use them as centerpieces, mantel decor, or make a smaller size for buffet table food signs! Easily customizable to your school’s colors!
This is a quick and easy DIY Graduation Party Decor idea that is always a huge hit! You can make different sizes of these for different things! This pot I am using for a table centerpiece, however, I might choose the smaller ones I can pick up at Dollar Tree (in a 3 pack!) to use as the food stands on my buffet table for the graduation party!

How to Make Clay Pot Graduation Cap
Time needed: 25 minutes
Turn a clay pot and wooden square into the cutest graduation decor! Perfect for centerpieces or to add to your mantel!
- Paint the pieces
Paint the wooden square, clay pot, and wooden plug in the color of your choosing. Be sure to paint the edges of the wooden square Let dry.
- Assemble the Graduation Cap
Using glue, attach the wooden square to the bottom of the clay pot.
I found it easiest to flip both upsides down so you can more easily find the center of the wooden square with the pot. - Make a Tassel
Using embroidery floss or twine wrap your four fingers in twine over and over. Carefully remove from your fingers and tie off near the top. Cut the bottom edge and trim to length. Loop a piece of floss through the top.
- Attach Tassel
Using the wooden plug, attach the tassel to the center of the wooden square to create the top of the grad cap.
Other Ideas for Clay Pot Grad Cap
You omit the dowel cap and drill a hole in the wooden square in the center that would match with the hole in the bottom of the clay pot.
Add any tinsel picks or the wire star ribbon if desired. You can also use my Graduation Cap and Diploma files to add to dowels to create a taller centerpiece!
Attach some floral or jewelry wire to small pots and use them to hold food cards on your graduation buffet table!
