Create the cutest Halloween cupcakes using some Oreo cookies! These bat cupcakes can be as easy as using store bought ingredients or using your favorite made-from-scratch recipes! I am including my chocolate buttercream recipe below!
Like I said before you can make these as time consuming as you have time for, lol. Use store bought chocolate cupcakes, use box cupcake mix, use a tub of chocolate icing or make from scratch if you prefer!
I am doing a semi-homemade version using premade cupcakes with homemade icing. I picked up some premade, un-iced cupcakes from the bakery department at my grocery store. You can ask for these anytime, they almost always have some made and not-iced. You can also get them iced with chocolate icing too to save time.

How to Make Oreo Bat Cupcakes
Start by twisting apart an Oreo in to two halves. Cut the cookie without the filling in half to make two wings. Press the corner of the wings into the white filling of the bottom cookie.
Twist apart another cookie. Put a small amount of that cookie’s filling on top of the inner center portion of the bat wings. Put a top cookie on the bat wings and gently press together.
Put a small amount of white filling on the back of two candy eyeballs to make the bat’s face.
Repeat until 12 bats are made.
Next, make the frosting by adding the butter to a large bowl and mix using an electric mixer on medium speed for 1-2 minutes. You can also use a stand mixer with the whisk attachment. Turn the speed to low and slowly add in the powdered sugar to the butter mixture one cup at a time. *full recipe below
Pause to scrape the sides of the bowl with a spatula, add in the heavy cream and cacao powder. Continue to mix on medium-high speed for another minute.
Transfer to a piping bag. You can use a large circle or star tip or you can simply snip the corner of the bag and squeeze from there. Whatever you have on hand!
Assemble the cupcakes by piping the frosting onto a chocolate cupcake base and add a bat Oreo to the top of the cupcakes.
Halloween Treat Tips & Tricks
- If the premade cupcakes have generic cupcake liners, simply add a Halloween themed on over the generic one!
- You can use your favorite cake mix, it doesn’t have to be chocolate!
- Get the kids involved with assembling the bat cookies! And adult can cut the cookies and the kids assemble!
- If you are having trouble getting the cookies to stay together after adding the wings, add a bit of chocolate frosting to help “glue” them together!
