Kick a margarita up a notch with this delicious Blood Orange Margarita Recipe! Silver Tequila, orange liqueur, fresh blood orange juice, and fresh lime bring punch to your palette! Flavorful and citrusy, this blood orange margarita will become your fast favorite!
I am a huge fan of margaritas! There is just something about them that brings the fun for sure! In celebration of National Margarita Day, I can’t wait to share this recipe with you.
One thing I love about this particular version is that there is not any simple syrup used. All the flavor and sweetness come from the blood oranges!
What is a Blood Orange?
Blood oranges appear like regular oranges on the outside, but the flesh is a definite change.
The flesh of a blood orange is red to dark red and it is less acidic and sweeter than regular orange varieties, such as a navel orange. It is also said to have hints of raspberry and strawberry flavors.
Blood oranges are also full of anthocyanins, which is a type of antioxidant.
When is Orange Season?
Oranges, like many citrus fruits, are best from the months of December through April. With citrus season early in the year, it makes this a great cocktail for National Margarita Day on 2/25!
Blood Orange Margarita Recipe Ingredients
- Tequila: Use a good quality silver tequila (tequila Blanco) This tequila is clear or “silver” in color because it has not been aged giving it a heavy agave flavor.
- Orange Liqueur: Again, use a quality liqueur such as Grand Marnier or Cointreau or a quality triple sec.
- Blood Orange Juice: use fresh blood oranges! You will not get the same result with a navel orange.
- Lime Juice: use fresh limes. On average 1 lime has 2 tablespoons or 1 ounce of juice. You can also be fancy and include a bit of lime zest into the salt for rimming!
- Flakey Sea Salt: Flakey sea salt is a type of salt and is known for the unique, flattened shape of salt crystals. This shape allows it to stick to food better than granulated salt. The flattened shape also allows it to dissolve and blend easier as well.
*Tajin is a great substitute for the flakey sea salt on the rim of your glass if you want a spicy blood orange margarita!

How to Make Blood Orange Margaritas
You are going to start out by rimming a glass with salt. To do this, take a lime or orange slice and rub it around the rim, then dip the rim of the glass into a cocktail rimmer or small plate filled with salt.
Next, you will add ice to a cocktail shaker and combine tequila, orange liqueur, fresh orange juice, and fresh lime juice. Add the lid and shake until the outside of the shaker is frosty, about 30 seconds to 1 minute.
Then, strain the chilly beverage over your ice-filled, salt-rimmed glass.
Garnish the orange cocktail with a slice of blood orange or lime slice or both! Cheers!
