Do you Want to moisturize your lips? Want to have fun lip glosses at a fraction of the retail cost? How about lip balm made of natural ingredients? If you answered yes to any of these I have a GREAT recipe for how to make your own lip balm that is a favorite around here!
I love lip balm. Love it. I also, apparently, love to LOSE my lip balm…like all the time. I guess I don’t lose it, I just misplace it. It normally always turns up however never when my lips need it! I don’t really have a solution for you today on misplacing it however I do have a great solution and recipe on:
How to Make Your Own Lip Balm
Yummy kinds! I can also tell you that this recipe is really versatile and you can use it for other things besides your lips! Especially the peppermint and lavender! We’ll talk more about that below! (you can also use other essential oils besides those I used!)
I love lip balms! However if you read the ingredient list of the drug store ones, you might be surprised at what you are adsorbing into your body as well as consuming, because you are putting it on your lips!! This lip balm has 4 ingredients. You can pronounce them all and have heard of them before!
Supplies Needed to Make Your Own Lip Balm:
- Lip balm tubes or little tubs. I linked to the ones I used. (not affiliate links) Feel free to use whatever you’d like!
- 1/4 cup Organic Beeswax
- 1/4 cup Coconut Oil
- 1000 IU Vitamin E capsule (2)
- Essential Oils (I used Peppermint, Lavender & Lemon)
This recipe below will yield 6 tubes of lip balm.
How to Make Your Own Lip Balm Instructions
1. In a glass measuring cup with pour spout, add your beeswax and coconut oil. Microwave in 30 second increments until it is melted.
2. I pierced a Vitamin E capsule with a pin and squeezed the liquid vitamin E into the measuring cup with the coconut oil and beeswax.
3. Add about 20 drops* of essential oils. (it’s best to wait about 3-4 minutes from the time you take the melted mixture out of the microwave before adding the EO’s. The time it takes to add the vitamin E is normally sufficient)
*I like to add a bit more peppermint to get that minty fresh tingle on my lips.
I also love combinations. I did some with 20 drops peppermint and 10 drops lavender together. <—It’s amazing! Mix some, do some by themselves, whatever makes you happy!
4. Pour into your lip balm containers slightly past the top. The mixture will “shrink” when it cools so if you slightly fill so that it is just too full, then it cools to the perfect level!
This will cool fine on your counter in a matter of minutes, or you can pop in the refrigerator also!
TIPS for Consistency:
For a firmer balm – use a tablespoon more beeswax
For a softer balm – use a tablespoon more coconut oil
So above I mentioned you can use it for more than just lip balm. My first batch was softer (more coconut oil) and I made a lavender/peppermint mixture that I like to keep in my purse. If the kids are on my last nerve and my head wants to explode, I just put some of this on my temples.
To make my tubes cute and also to let me know what kind of balm was inside, I used some of my favorite washi tape from We R Memory Keepers. A little on the tube and a little on the cap and the slender solid kind for the little tubs!
I love these little tubs as well and have used them as hand moisturizer. Especially the lavender one! Spangenbaby is teething and sucks on his fingers and this cold weather has made some of them red and a bit rough. I can dab a little on from these tubs in my purse and he is ready to go!
Whenever my lips start to get dry I also know that is partially because I am not drinking enough water. Stop over to this post to see my top 5 tips to drink more water!

Hi Cheryl. When I read your little “about” blurb in the sidebar next to your picture I thought…wow…that is me. LOL! Only you are tons younger. My boys are 24 and 19 now. Anyway, I have always wanted to make lip balm but have never tried it because I thought it would be some long, involved process. But this sounds pretty easy! Thank you.

Aww Michelle, thank you! I love meeting people who understand, ha! I thought it would be super hard too and now I whip it up on a whim! I hope you love it! Thanks for visiting my blog!!

When you measure the beeswax and coconut oil, is that 1/4 cup already melted or solid? My beeswax came in 1oz cubes, so I’m not sure how to measure out 1/4 cup unless I melt it first?
Cheryl Spangenberg says
Jennifer that was 1/4 cup solid. I would recommend grating your beeswax before melting. If not, and you try to melt the 1 oz cube, it will not melt evenly and you will be left with hardened wax.

I just made this tonight. Did you use refined or unrefined coconut oil? I actually used 25 drops of oil and I can’t really smell any of it in the lip balm. It really doesn’t have much of a smell at all.
Cheryl Spangenberg says
Amy, I used unrefined Organic Coconut oil. Which EO did you add to your balms? My lemon ones have lost some of their luster however I can still smell each one after quite some time and tell which is which (because a certain small person pulled off all the washi tape from the tubes!)

Hello! This sounds like something I would love to try. How many tubes does this recipe make?
Thanks for sharing your ideas!
Cheryl Spangenberg says
Oh my goodness Sarah…I honestly cannot remember! I made several big batches of it and it took me a few tries to get the right consistency. I am so sorry. I plan to make some more soon and I will come back and let you know! I would guess 6-8 tubes.
Sarah says
Thank you!
That sounds about right to me. I made a half recipe of this and put it in the little round containers. It filled between 5-8, depending on how completely I filled them.
I think I would like to try them in the tubes next, as it was a perfect consistency for that.
Thanks for sharing your recipe!

Hi Cheryl, so the beeswax I found were in the forum of beads would I still use 1/4 cup?
Thank you!
Cheryl Spangenberg says
Yes! Mine were small beads (or pellets) too!

Also I was wondering I bought the vitamin E liquid that comes in the bottle do you know how much I should use?
Lynda says
I had the same question!
Cheryl Spangenberg says
1/8 teaspoon should work great!!

These would be perfect as homemade bridal shower favors!

I was wondering if you’ve had any trouble using the citrus oils in a plastic container. Typically they say to store those in a glass container so it doesn’t deteriorate the plastic. I have the plastic tubes so I’m curious if I should buy glass pots to make the lemon balm.
Cheryl Spangenberg says
Great question Megan! I had zero problems! We do use ours pretty fast though, however I actually just found a tube from this original batch I made for this post that had fallen back down behind my dining room buffet and it’s still perfectly fine and I used it this morning!! Lemon tubes and Lime tubes are my favorite!!!

Thank you for the tutorial! Have you tried using Cinnamon Essential Oil for a lip balm? I’m thinking it might taste great, and might actually “plump” the lips a little… Just a thought, and I was also curious as to whether you’ve tried it. Thanks!

I’ve never made lip balm before, but I just made this, using lavender and peppermint together, and it was so easy! I had sticks of beeswax and chopped it up a bit, so it took a while for it to melt. I’ll try grating it next time as you suggest. It filled 12 tubes and I still had extra! I poured it in a little tub.
Cheryl Spangenberg says
So happy Elizabeth! We love to try new combinations and oils each time we make it!
Melissa says
Thanks for the amazing recipe! I’ve made the lip balm about 6 times and it’s always perfect. I have wheat germ oil capsules on hand so I substitute it for the vitamin E. I will never buy a tube of lip balm again…it’s that great!
Cheryl Spangenberg says
So glad you love it Melissa!
Jessica says
What is the purpose of the vitamin e?
Cheryl Spangenberg says
Hi Jessica, Vitamin E helps to prevent skin damage from free radicals and the sun’s ultraviolet rays. It’s known for speeding up the wound healing process of chapped, irritated lips.
Barbara says
Can u use liquid coconut oil ?
Cheryl Spangenberg says
Barbara, if you use fractionated coconut oil your balm will not solidify correctly. Solid coconut oil, melted will then resolidify. Fractionated coconut oil (always in liquid state) will not solidify!
Lisa says
If I don’t want to use essential oils, can I use baking flavor oils instead?
Asma Sadiq says
I have made this for my sister and it seems out to be perfect. So easy to make. Will be making it again soon! Thanks for sharing.

So glad you love it, Asma!
