I am kind of picky when it comes to what I put on my face. Especially products that I use around or on my eyes. These simple DIY Eye Make Up Remover Pads have become my favorite new product and I MADE THEM MYSELF! They are simple and natural and you can pronounce EVERY ingredient! (There are only TWO!)
I wear contacts and I have the ones that you can wear for a month and then throw away. Even though they are disposal, I am very particular (ok snobby) about the products I use around my eyes.
I really don’t like when they leave my eyes feeling goopy and heavy, or when the products make my contacts all fuzzy. I also despise picking up a container of eye make up remover pads and they have chemicals and ingredients that could only be described as a bad hand of scrabble letters! You can’t pronounce them and who even knows what they are. On top of this, then they leave the area around my eyes “oily” and my new eye makeup doesn’t stand a chance at even lasting an hour!
Here is the ingredient list in my former, well respected company’s eye make up remover pads: Paraffinum Liquidum (Mineral Oil), Huile Minerale), Propylene Glycol Dicaprylate/dicaprate, phenoxyethanol, propylparaben, methylparaben.
Hmmmm…did you see the words PARABEN in there TWICE! I am putting this on the sensitive, thin layer of skin around two of the most awesome organs of my body…my eyes!
I have a great DIY version of make up remover padsfor you today using two of my favorite things! Coconut Oil + Lavender Essential Oils!
Ingredients You’ll Need for DIY Make Up Remover Pads:
- Container to store your make up remover pads (I used a small mason jar)
- Circle Cotton Pads (picked mine up at Dollar Tree)
- Coconut Oil
- Lavender Essential Oil
This is super simple. Take your container and fill it with cotton pads. Go ahead and fill it to the top.
Then I added coconut Oil to a tablespoon measuring spoon. I also added 5 drops of Lavender to the Coconut oil. I dumped the oil over top of the cotton pads.
I then screwed on the lid tightly and I let sit for about an hour. Then I flipped the jar over and let it sit for another hour. Just long enough to let the coconut oil and lavender distribute through the cotton pads. You want them moist to remove your make up but not dripping or over saturate. Just moist. (<<FYI…my sister hates the word moist. I thought about typing it a few more times in case she reads this post, lol!)
After you do this last step if you open your jar and feel they aren’t moist enough (<<said it again) then just add a teaspoon more of coconut oil and repeat the sitting and flipping over of the container.
I use these make-up remover pads daily to remove my waterproof mascara, eye liner and shadow if for some reason I felt fancy and actually used eye shadow. Ha!
So here are my ingredients: 100% Pure Coconut Oil, 100% Therapeutic Grade Lavender Essential Oil. So much better than the ingredient list above, right?!

This sounds good. What does the lavender oil add to the process? Is it just a scent or has it a function?
Cheryl Spangenberg says
Lynn, Lavender soothes and cleanses healthy skin! Keeps that precious skin around your eye balls top notch! It also smells amazing!
Lisa Honch says
Silly question do you melt the oil first?
Cheryl Spangenberg says
Not silly Lisa! I use Fractionated Coconut Oil so it is in liquid form at all temperatures. If you use regular coconut oil, it will solidify as it gets cold. Which is not totally a problem just that you will need the heat from your skin to “re-warm” it when you use the makeup remover pads. I think you could certainly make it work!
Traci says
Can you substitute another oil? Almond, evening prim rose,
Cheryl Spangenberg says
I haven’t tried it Traci. I used coconut oil because it contains both lauric acid and monolaurin that can kill bacteria and viruses.

Love this idea! Definetly going to try this! Thanks, thanks, thanks!

Can you use baby oil ?
Cheryl Spangenberg says
Baby oil is mineral oil + perfumes. So I would say it’s up to you. I use coconut oil because it’s all natural (no perfumes) and the coconut oil itself has antibacterial and antifungal properties.
Maggy says
Does the coconut oil make your skin greasy? I know young girls who like natural solutions but I’m hesitant to add oil to already acne prone skin.
Cheryl Spangenberg says
Maggy, it is not any more greasy than the bottle of eye make up remover I used to use. I don’t find coconut oil to be that greasy. It does give a sheen that would appear it greasy however it absorbs in the time it takes me to brush my teeth. There is also not much at all on these pads, just enough to help distribute the lavender and made the pad glide across your skin! I am just using right around my eye area so I have not had any problems with it affecting acne. You could also use jojoba oil. I hear that is great for acne prone skin.

I use just the fragmented coconut oil on a cotton round to remove WATERPROOF make up. It comes off so easily and no stinging! Then I squirt some in my hand and rub all over my face to remove foundation, lipstick, blush, etc. for about 30 seconds. Then rinse. NO make up residue on my white towels at all! Then use apple cider vinegar (with the mother) on a q-tip for age spots, blemishes and anything else growing on the face, leave it on for 5 minutes and rinse off. Last step, more coconut oil as an all over moisturizer. Shines at first, but soaks in quickly. The best thing is, you do your face, neck, hands, nails – everything – all with the same product. LOVE it and will never use anything else again! (PS – I am 62 years old and have tried SO many products. Wish I knew about this about 45 years ago!)

I’ve used this, my preacher’s wife made some and gave it the the deacon’s and yoke fellows wife’s for Christmas. I loved it, but I haven’t made any. Will make some and give out as gifts. Thanks for making it easy!!!!
Celeste says
Hi can this be done beforehand and after work I just take one cotton pad out to remove the makeup
.
Cheryl Spangenberg says
Absolutely! I make them up and use them all week long!!
Celeste says
Alright shall try it out soon! Thanks for sharing =D
Cheryl Spangenberg says
Great!! Thanks for reading my blog!
Jessica says
I want to make these for my sister but she only ever stops home once in awhile. Do you normally make them for the week or do you think I could use a bigger mason jar and just add more oil to it?
Cheryl Spangenberg says
Jessica as long as the jar is clean, they keep forever! I made a big jar of them for myself and I have never had a problem with them! Also they don’t have to be soaked in oil. You don’t actually want your eyes all full of oil for the night/day so my trick is to keep the jar upright for a few days, and then turn it upside down for a few days. The oil then makes its way perfectly to all the cotton pads!

I’m so glad to have found this, and you’ve done a fantastic job of explaining the WHY’s. We should all be aware of what we’re putting on our skins. Some ingredients, as in most sun protection and tanning lotions actually are detrimental to your bones!! So this is going to be my next go-to for my eye makeup removal instead of the cosmetic shelf in the store. THANK YOU!
AC says
Can this be used as an overall face wipe or just for eye make up? Thanks
Cheryl Spangenberg says
Absolutely it can! Some other oils that are great for your face are Frankincense, Rose, & Copaiba!
