I have to say that when you are pregnant and NOT with your first, you look to every possible avenue to celebrate this little baby! My Gender Reveal Party was just what I wanted to celebrate this little person who I am so thankful to have. You get baby showers with your first and you get “sprinkles” with your second if they are different gender than your first but what do you get if you have a same gender baby or it’s your fifth? Not much? Why not? Why can’t we celebrate life?
I know Gender Reveal Parties are a “new” thing but if we can get together to celebrate a football game, of which neither team playing is our own team, and it is socially acceptable to get together to buy jewelry or Tupperware…why can’t we get together to celebrate a new baby?!? In my case, after 5 miscarriages I can damn well do what I please! :)
The Theme for my party was “Blue or Pink…What do you think?” I whipped up an invitation in Photoshop:
I was having it in the afternoon so I decided on a Sweet Treats Bar and a Beverage Bar. They turned out really fun! I kept with the Gray/Blue/Pink color scheme. I found this fun polka dot paper-ish fabric at Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft Stores. It was with the Utility Fabric and it is like a thick papery fabric…hard to explain but perfect for a table cloth!
For the Dessert Table I purchased some cute little lollipops and Taffy from Candy Galaxy in blue and pink. I couldn’t resist the Sixlets in blue and pink as well!
Then I added some blue and pink cupcakes as well as some donut holes with cute Washi Tape Flags. You can also make your own candy coated pretzels as well which turned out to be a fan favorite!
Then I added these ADORABLE onesie cookies from Crazy for Cookies! She is local here in St. Louis and she even delivered them to me! They were as delicious as they were adorable!
I hung a banner above the table that read: “Blue or Pink ?” along with some balloons on each side of the table!
For the beverage bar I had a Blue and Pink Punch and then served that in some of my favorite mason jar cups with cute blue and pink paper straws! We also had a coffee bar, wine and beer (this is MY family we are talking about) and then these cute water bottles with blue and pink chevron water bottle labels!

The Balloon Pop Announcement:
To announce the gender of the baby I purchased this 36” black balloon online, stuffed it with the appropriate colored tissue paper confetti and then took it to Party City and they filled it with helium for me. I posed it along with some other blue and pink helium balloons.
When it was time to announce…I simply popped the balloon!
Then it was clear to everyone that we were having a baby boy!
Supplies Needed:
- Black 36″ Balloon
- Pink or Blue Tissue Paper
- Optional Balloons
Note: It is important to use tissue paper here and NOT regular paper. The tissue paper is soft enough that it will not pop the balloon as they are filling it or as you are transporting it home.
I simply cut the tissue into strips and then into squares and just stuffed it inside the balloon. I used an unsharpened pencil to help get the confetti into the main part of the balloon. They they filled it as they would normally.
So tell me…did you reveal the gender of your baby in a fun way? Or were you revealed the gender of a family member in a fun way? Let me know in the comments below!

what size pin did you use to pop the balloon?
Cheryl Spangenberg says
Just a pin I found in my sewing drawer!

Beautiful party! Did you make your own tissue confetti? Any tips to getting it in the balloon?
Cheryl Spangenberg says
Hi Hannah! Yes I just cut regular tissue paper for the confetti. The mouth of the baloon was pretty large and I just shoved it in, lol! I used a pencil to pus it all the way up the neck into the balloon! (and UNsharpened pencil!)

Hi! I’m planning on doing this for my sister’s gender reveal this month! Did they have any issues filling it up with helium with the confetti in there? I’m going to send my husband to get it filled up so I’m hoping it won’t be an issue! :)
Cheryl Spangenberg says
No problems at all Amanda! Make sure to use tissue paper. Regular paper is said to be sharp enough to pop the balloon. I just stuffed it and took it in and they filled it with no problems! Good luck! Congratulations to your sister!!!

Very cute! I was just wondering what website did u purchase the balloon?
Cheryl Spangenberg says
Jennifer, I honestly cannot remember I think it was on GroopDealz. If you search “large black balloon” on etsy there are a ton of sellers!!

Hi just wondering if this is the exact photo of when you popped the balloon and did you have a fan going or something? I went into party shop today to order a balloon and they pretty much told me it woudnt work as the paper would stick to the balloon and the paper would weigh the balloon down so wouldnt float so wondered if you could give me some tips on how you got it so perfect? Thanks
Cheryl Spangenberg says
Hi Rebecca,
Yes this is the exact photo of when I announced! I did not have a fan going at all. I bought my black balloon online, it was 36″ in diameter. I stuffed it myself with cut up tissue paper and took it to Party City and they filled it with helium for me with absolutely no problems at all! ($7) The party stores near me did not have balloons this large. If you use tissue paper there would be no reason it would weigh it down enough that it wouldn’t float? Also the paper did not stick to the balloon at all. The tissue exploded everywhere when the balloon was popped. The force of the “pop” and the fact that helium is lighter than air (chemical engineer here) is about the perfect combination for a huge confetti mess! Which is what you want! I would bet you that the party store worker has probably never popped one of these in real life so has no idea they are just telling you they can’t do it. Good Luck!!

Hi! Love all the details of your party! Where did you get the paper confetti from? I was wondering what size would work best. Thanks!
Stacy says
Oh goodness. Just saw where you mentioned you cut up the tissue paper yourself. Any advice on how large to cut/how much to use? thanks!
Cheryl Spangenberg says
Stacy, I just cut some tissue paper for gifts in squares and stuffed it until the balloon part felt full!
Lisa Janzen says
I am just wondering how much you filled the balloon to give it a good enough effect like that. Half full? a quarter?
Thanks,
Lisa
Cheryl Spangenberg says
I filled the balloon until I could squeeze it and feel tissue paper in there. The balloon was pretty big so I just stuffed it until it felt like it had a bunch of tissue! Sorry, not very exact or scientific!
Kassie barr says
How much tissue paper sheets did you buy/cut up?
Cheryl Spangenberg says
Oh goodness Kassie, I cannot recal the exact number of sheets because 1. it was too long for my mom brain to remember and 2. i stuffed 2 at the same time to make sure I could get good photos. I bought a pack of tissue and it had several sheets of all the different blues an I just sat down and folded them over and over and got to cutting and stuffing. When I squeezed the stuffed balloons I could feel that they were stuffed with paper. You want enough that it goes everywhere :)
Patrick says
That was probably very loud!
Cheryl Spangenberg says
It was not as loud as I was originally anticipating but it was loud!
Patrick says
Did you use a needle? Did you blow up the balloon, and how long did it take to blow it up?
